Dr Frans Coenen is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Liverpool and Director of Studies for online computing programmes. His areas of specialisation include artificial intelligence, data mining and data analytics. He helped to set up the University’s first fully online degree programmes and has been involved in developing new online computing programmes and driving continual improvements to Liverpool's online learning platform ever since.

His interest in computing was sparked by computers installed on ships to record water temperatures in the 1970s. Working in the merchant navy, Frans taught himself to programme these computers and adapted them for use in navigation. He went on to complete a PhD in artificial intelligence applied to marine navigation. He has an extensive list of published research papers and contributions to academic books.
