Anne Sophie Gerin Anne-Sophie Gérin originally comes from Belgium. While working as a midwife in Djibouti, she studied online with the University of Liverpool and graduated with an MPH.

Why did you decide to study online with the University of Liverpool?

I wanted a masters from an English university with a very strong reputation, and I needed to study online as I couldn’t put my family life on hold for my degree. Liverpool ticked both boxes.

What was your motivation for pursuing the MPH programme?

I felt that although I had a lot of professional experience I couldn’t match colleagues with a masters degree in terms of theoretical knowledge and understanding. Now I feel the MPH has given me a certain standing professionally.

Can you tell us about your experience of the virtual classroom?

Sharing a classroom with people from all over the world was one of the most amazing things about studying online. I learnt so much through my classmates and I never felt like I was being judged. In fact it was quite the opposite – people were always very keen to discuss more so the whole process felt very integrated and together. I should also say that each teacher was a very good moderator of the group discussions so I felt supported all the time and never really felt ‘alone’ as such!

How has your degree affected your professional life?

I feel my focus has changed. I think I see things from a much more global perspective now. Prior to my masters it might have been fair to say I was very focused on my own experience in making decisions. Now I look at things in much more depth and am able to challenge, engage and communicate at a much higher level, which feels very empowering!

Any tips for those about to begin online studies with Liverpool?

You have to accept that at times it will be difficult but remember that all your classmates are also balancing studies with their professional and family life so share your concerns! Talking to those in the same boat can really help you find solutions and move forward.

I would recommend the University of Liverpool because…

..of the quality of the programme, the quality of the teachers and the quality of the students. It is an excellent university and my masters was worth every penny and hour invested. If I was to start over, I would study online with Liverpool again!
