Emily Moonze is a Nurse-management Planning Specialist in Lusaka, Zambia, and a University of Liverpool online MPH graduate. In 2012 she presented her healthcare research at the World Congress on Public Health.“The University of Liverpool has helped me to grow professionally.”

What motivated you to study an MPH online with the University of Liverpool?

The team I was working with in the Ministry of Health were much more advanced in their education and I saw this as a limitation in my work. I had the experience but needed the academic background of an MPH in order to further my professional career growth. As I had a full time job, it was not possible for me to leave to pursue my education. The University offered me the opportunity I needed.

How is your MPH degree helping you to make a difference in your community?

The MPH programme broadens one’s thinking. It has basically broadened my scope. I now understand and appreciate community issues and can provide better technical guidance.

What impact is the MPH having on your career and day-to-day work?

I’ve been able to grow in my career and it has opened more windows for further career development: I am now a team leader and supervising nine other people in different provinces. My MPH study focus was on systems work, and this is exactly what I’m doing. I’ve also been able to gain recognition from other partners that I’m working with.

How did you enjoy the online discussions with your international student group?

This was the most interesting part of the training because it helps you to understand other people’s work and how this contributes to the overall improvement of health goals.

What are your top three tips for balancing work, study and personal commitments?

Know what you are looking for, plan adequately and prioritise your work.

Why would you recommend the University of Liverpool and the online MPH programme?

The University of Liverpool has helped me to grow professionally. The online MPH programme helps you to develop a broader picture of issues at a global level and to understand how other people from different backgrounds and countries address various health challenges.
