In July 2016, he graduated with an MSc in Project Management (Oil & Gas specialisation).
Why did you choose to study online for this degree with the University of Liverpool?
Three important aspects appealed to me, leading me to choose the University of Liverpool: 1. As a project manager, I noticed that the online programmes were planned in detail, well supported and well documented. 2. The programme offered the possibility to interact with students worldwide. 3. The degree offered the combination of project management knowledge and the energy specialisation.
How did you fit online study into your life?
This fit my work and private life, since I was taking advantage of any window of time during the day and at night. I also studied peacefully at my place and during trips, using either the laptop or my iPad. I remember studying in remote locations during our camping season or when we were travelling for Christmas Eve and New Year Eve celebrations.
What did you enjoy most about studying online with the University of Liverpool?
Honestly, the online library for me was extremely enjoyable – having access to multiple international, well recognised journals and publications. The second part that I really enjoyed was the possibility to contribute to the learning of other students and to receive their input on my postings – particularly where they had a different perception of the same project management topic.
What did you research for your degree?
I researched risk management, particularly the early detection of risks in Canadian energy projects.
What does it mean to you to finally graduate?
It has been a long journey, over 3 1/2 years from the moment I decided to pursue this journey. There were plenty of personal challenges along the way, including losing my job in the oil & gas industry half way through my degree. I also ended up in hospital a few days before sending my official dissertation. I actually submitted my dissertation from the hospital!
Has your online degree helped you move ahead?
The energy industry is having serious difficulties. I am lucky to have a job with the electrical utilities sector, but my expectation is that my MSc degree will help me move professionally into new energies and energy initiatives to meet climate change commitments.
I would recommend the University of Liverpool because...
the University has one of the best online MSc in Project Management programmes – well founded, supported and planned.
Luis was awarded a Student of the Year award in 2015 for his outstanding performance in the online MSc in Project Management. He deferred his graduation until 2016 so that he could attend the graduation ceremony in person, in Liverpool.
