Sam Smith graduated with an MSc in Psychology in December 2015. He is a commercial pilot and licensed aircraft engineer so his choice of master’s is perhaps surprising, but he was able to use his experience of the aviation industry to inform his dissertation research on airline passenger behaviour.

What do you do?
Currently I am working as a contract aircraft engineer in the UK. I really do not have a typical day, as every day varies slightly with different tasks and after a few weeks a different location.

Has your online degree changed you and/or helped you move ahead?
Graduating with an online psychology degree has changed me greatly. It has developed my skills to be a better teacher, observer and assessor as an engineer and a pilot. The additional knowledge has given me the skills and tools to tackle new problems.

Why did you choose to study online for this degree with the University of Liverpool?
I chose to study online for this degree with the University of Liverpool because it was accessible from any location with internet connection, because of the flexibility of time, and the easy payment plan.

How did you fit online study into your life?
The flexibility of studying online allowed me to continue with my studies online when I was travelling and in various locations worldwide, including hotels, airports, ferries and buses.

What did you enjoy most about studying online with the University of Liverpool?
Reading various journals and articles that were simply fascinating.

What was your experience of interacting with other international students?
Interaction with students from various parts of the world with different backgrounds created new understanding and delivered new perceptions on many subjects, therefore it played an important part of our learning.

What did you research for your degree?
Alcohol is one of the catalysts for unruly behaviour onboard aircraft, so I looked at phobia of flying and smoking among airline passengers as contributing factors towards an increase in alcohol consumption.

What does it mean to you to finally graduate (in Liverpool or from a distance)?
On paper, a huge step forward to show that I am capable and have achieved a higher standard of education. On a personal level, I have more confidence, I am more knowledgeable, and I am armed with a deeper understanding of psychology and human behaviour.
