Samer Akkoub is originally from Jordan but now lives in Saudi Arabia where he works as a Senior Technology Consultant for Oracle. He graduated with an MSc in Information System Management having studied online with the University of Liverpool. What motivated you to study online with Liverpool?
Studying a masters was a milestone I had always wanted to achieve but had often felt was impossible with the commitments I already had in my life. Given the flexibility of the programme with Liverpool, being able to achieve a dream without having to lose my job or put my family life to one side kept me very motivated.Did you find time management aspect of the programme challenging?
It’s certainly not easy, and there were many points when I felt that I was under pressure, but the Student Support Advisor gave me great advice on how to manage my time more carefully, and that really helped me to balance my time between family, work and study. Also, I found the subject matter itself very interesting, which makes a big difference.Has studying with the University of Liverpool had a positive effect on your career?
I think it has helped me stand out from peers with similar experience; I think now people look at my résumé and see that I have a masters degree from a prestigious university, something I think was a factor in getting my most recent position. On a personal level, I look at everything in my professional environment differently, so I see many solutions to a problem when I maybe didn’t in the past.Do you stay in touch with your classmates from the programme?
Yes, though not regularly. When I do it gives me a chance to network with professionals working in other cultures, facing different challenges and styles of management. Most of my classmates were in higher positions than me, so it’s a very good way to learn from their experience and build my own network, something that is very important to my work as a consultant. Was there someone specific other than faculty and staff who helped you graduate?
Well, first of all I have to say my wife! Without her I would not have been able to complete my masters. Also when I first joined the programme, I studied alongside a highly skilled manager who worked for a governmental organisation. I knew he wouldn’t have just chosen any university, so I watched what he did and followed suit, something I think helped.I would recommend the University of Liverpool because...
I would recommend the University of Liverpool to anyone who is looking to advance in their career and achieve something meaningful. Studying online can be tough and requires hard work, but it is worth it!
