From Malaysia, Siew Kuan Koay works in Switzerland as Global Lead Buyer at Von Roll Management AG. She studied online with the University of Liverpool, graduating in July 2013 with an MSc in Operations and Supply Chain Management. What was the main advantage of studying online for this MSc from the University of Liverpool?
The flexibility – as a University of Liverpool online masters programme allows you to study anywhere and anytime. What have been the challenges and highlights?
Submitting assignments on time during business travel was a challenge. The highlights of this study for me were the knowledge that I have gained and the people I have interacted with online. I had a very good Dissertation Advisor for my dissertation, and the students that I met online were from different countries around the world. What was your experience of online classroom discussions with fellow students?
The contact that I had in the virtual classroom with other students was similar to what you would expect with offline study, the only thing missing was that I didn’t see and talk to them face-to-face. However, I could still have very good discussions with them about topics that we were studying. In fact, I can even say that online discussion is more interesting than offline, because you can discuss more openly, since you are not seeing each other in person. How did you fit online study into your life?
My online study fitted perfectly into my normal life, even if I sometimes had to study until very late at night or into the early hours of the morning. I did my Discussion Questions, assignments, even the module projects during my holidays or business trips, on the train, in the aeroplane or in a hotel or holiday house. It worked well – I was able to carry on working as normal and join most of the important family events. Is your study already having a positive impact on your career?
Yes, it enhances my professional knowledge and improves my overall performance. What are your top tips for others?
