Bret Weekes was already a CEO when he decided to study online for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Liverpool. He did it to become a better leader, and to gain insights he could use to improve his business.
“I think that the changing landscape in business particularly in global economies really requires any executive to continue to push on their level of education, push on their capabilities,” he explains.
Originally from Utah, Bret has been working in the credit union industry for over twenty five years and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems in addition to his MBA. His business specializes in digital transaction management technology.
Providing inspiring, confident leadership is a priority for Bret. “Driving the success of the organization rests upon my ability to inspire others, obtain critical knowledge about market conditions and continually raise the bar on my own performance and knowledge.”
As President and CEO of eDOC Innovations, Inc., Bret has a busy schedule and he travels often. Being able to study online for his MBA gave him the flexibility to work and gain a quality business education from an AACSB-accredited Management School at the same time.
The programme’s structure allowed Bret to find a balance between work, life and study, and he was pleased with the way the programme content was delivered online.
“The online programme has a robust, challenging curriculum that will expand your outlook. The technology is excellent and the professors engaging,” he says.
The opportunity to discuss ideas within an international forum of fellow online MBA students was key benefit for Bret. His business operates in the fast-moving world of mobile technologies where economies are intertwined, and having an international perspective is an advantage.
University of Liverpool online students are assessed on their coursework, and on their contributions to weekly online discussions. Bret found that interactive online forum to be a useful sounding board. “I'd encourage students to think about it as a collaboration point, where you get free insight from smart people all over the world,” he says.
Studying while continuing to run the company gave Bret the opportunity to put what he was learning into practice straight away. It was one of the most valuable features of the online MBA.
“I could take the study topic of the week and apply it every day in my role at work,” he says. “Our firm is better for my receiving my degree, and I'm a better leader as well.”
“Running my business is my biggest project, and my masters degree is paying dividends to the firm every day.”
