The online PGCert in Management programme has three core modules and one elective module. The first module takes 12 weeks. Each subsequent module lasts eight weeks.

Strategic Management (12 weeks)

Objectives:

To introduce the framework, concepts and principles associated with Strategic Management.

Description:

During your first module you will develop your knowledge and understanding of multi-level processes involved in the strategic management of organisations. You will study leading edge theory relating to progressive management strategy, while also assessing the importance of effective management in relation to implementing corporate and business strategy. This module will serve as an intellectual platform to proceed to further modules of study.

Business Leadership (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To review current ideas and best practices of leadership within contemporary organisations.

Description:

This module is designed to equip you with the skills necessary to cope with ambiguity, continuity and change, and to understand the relationship between leadership and teams. As a student, you will explore historical and contemporary models of leadership, and examine the relationship between the individual and the group. You will increase your understanding of the responsibilities and privileges of leadership and will apply leadership theory to real-life situations.

Managing Financial Resources (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To review the role accounting and finance play in supporting managers and organisational leaders.

Description:

Through this module you will explore the basic frameworks for financial accounting, managerial accounting and corporate finance. You’ll gain an understanding of how information provided by accounting is disseminated, and then used to support overall management and organisational goals. You’ll also learn to critically evaluate the ethical and moral dimensions of strategic financial decision making.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To provide an awareness of the mind-set, skills and competencies required to become an effective innovator and entrepreneur.

Description:

This module will introduce some of the key concepts and principles associated with innovation and entrepreneurship. You’ll identify the factors associated with good practices in developing entrepreneurial behaviour, and consider the elements that go into making a working environment conducive for innovative thinking. By the end of this module you’ll also understand the imperatives of innovative new technologies, and demonstrate how they can form the basis of a sustainable new business.

Human Resource Management (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To explore the shifting role of HR from process manager to strategic business advisor and partner.

Description:

The Human Resource Management module will increase your understanding of the role HR now plays within contemporary organisations. No longer simply a business function, progressive HR now operates as a key business partner, capable of complementing overall business strategy and organisational goals. By exploring this shift, you’ll come to understand the link between human resource management and positively impacting organisational performance.

Organisational Design and Change (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To foster a strategic approach to change, through evaluating the role HR management plays in facilitating, leading and managing organisational change.

Description:

Organisational Design and Change considers the role management plays in addressing the challenges posed by uncertain, complex and dynamic business environments. You will explore the evolving requirements of organisational design, and the need to adopt a strategic approach to change through appropriate leadership, and a clear understanding of both resistance to change and learning for personal and team development.

International Business (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To explore the role of management in the context of operating in an international business setting.

Description:

Throughout this module you’ll study how global businesses operate, and the subsequent environment those managing in international business work in. You’ll gain an awareness of the role played by international bodies such as the IMF, EU and WTO while also studying the ethical and cultural issues surrounding management within multinational firms.

Marketing Concepts for Managers (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To equip students with understanding of the nature and purpose of marketing in relation to other functions within an organisation.

Description:

This module will help students to develop knowledge and understanding of the function of marketing within an organisation, how it interconnects with other functions and its impact on the evolution of corporate strategy. Through analysing the factors that make marketing a key strategic element in organisational performance, you’ll hone your strategic thinking skills while still appreciating the operational role marketing has in terms of meeting corporate objectives.

Management of Strategic Operations (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To introduce frameworks, principles and key learning relating to Management of Strategic Operations.

Description:

Specific topics of this module include the examination of modern business drivers and competitive performance, the achievement of competitive advantage, operations management, and globalisation. As you evaluate techniques for measuring and improving performance, you’ll also develop an understanding of the strategic role of operations in the management of modern business processes.
