The online PGCert in Project Management programme has four core modules. The first module takes 12 weeks. Each subsequent module lasts eight weeks.

Project and Portfolio Management in Organisations (12 weeks)

Objectives:

To investigate project management as a key management paradigm, looking at the impact of projects and portfolios within an organisational context as well as understanding project leadership that achieves organisational goals.

Description:

This module introduces you to key principles and strategies for effective project management in today’s highly competitive global marketplace and to the terminology used by professional bodies such as the Project Management Institute (PMI) and APM. You will consider current research and trends in the field and will gain a deeper understanding of the roles of key participants and the project manager throughout each stage of a project lifecycle. You will hone your leadership skills, learn how best to support and guide team members and how to work effectively amid the constraints of time and budget and disruptions of project uncertainty.

Planning for Risk, Uncertainty and Complexity (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To provide students with the appropriate techniques needed to plan, monitor and control projects while understanding project complexity in terms of uncertainty and risk.

Description:

The module emphasis here is on planning time and resources. This is demonstrated through the development of a comprehensive project plan, including a supporting cost control plan and a risk management plan. As a student, you will gain a greater understanding of project risk, uncertainty and complexity and learn how to apply suitable techniques to plan, monitor and control work packages and projects.

Executing Controlling and Closing Projects (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To introduce the processes of executing, controlling and closing projects.

Description:

Execution and Control is a critical phase in any project. This module introduces processes, tools and techniques for putting project plans into practice while establishing necessary monitoring and control structures to handle issues that could influence a project’s smooth progress. As a student, you will also focus on project scope and appropriate corrective actions needed to maintain quality and project performance.

Sustainable Programme and Portfolio Management (8 weeks)

Objectives:

To promote sustainability as a key issue in modern project management and to provide students with the knowledge and skills to manage multiple projects.

Description:

This module provides you with an opportunity to develop your understanding of all aspects of programme and portfolio management. You will investigate sustainability – social equity, economic efficiency and environmental performance management – looking at key issues including the project life cycle. You will also learn the principles and techniques of managing multiple projects – including supply chain benchmarking, resource scheduling in a corporate environment, and change management.

The aspect I enjoy most is the ability to work closely with my DBA peers. We work in an action learning set to solve real problems by linking the literature with real-world business practice – driving the generation of new knowledge to help in solving workplace issues.
