The programme didn’t hinder my personal commitments because of its flexibility. At the same time, I didn’t ever feel that I was missing on-campus learning because of the classroom discussions. They made the whole experience come to life and were a constant source of motivation.

Flexibility in a framework

Online learning gives you freedom and flexibility but requires commitment and self-discipline. Each degree programme has a structured framework with specific deadlines that help to keep you motivated:

  • You start your studies on a specific date – each degree has from 2-5 start dates annually
  • You must complete your degree within a maximum number of years
  • Your degree has 8 or 9 taught modules lasting 6-12 weeks each, usually separated by breaks of 1-2 weeks
  • In each taught module, you will have assignment deadlines every week or every other week
  • In your final, research module – lasting several months – you will also have deadlines to meet.

Throughout your degree, you’ll have support available on study, technical and academic issues.

Your time commitment

Earning an advanced degree from a high ranking UK university takes time. You will need to set aside study time in your daily and weekly schedule in order to succeed.

How much time will you need?
  • Typically an average of 20-25 hours per week depending on academic experience
  • You may need longer at first
  • Allow extra time if you are not used to writing in English

You will need to sustain that effort over several years. Expect to study for:

  • 1 year for a Postgraduate Certificate
  • 2.5 years on average for a masters degree
  • 5 years typically for a doctorate
